THE FARM
The farm of Antonio Guerra was founded in Piandalberi, a little hamlet of Sassocorvaro, a small village in the province of Pesaro and Urbino. After the military service, Guerra Antonio worked as a driver for a mill, and when it closed, he started working for the family farm, which was taken over in 1988.
Nowadays this is the only farm in Italy which deals with the bringing up of the turkey called "Nostrano".
The other farms which have this king of animal, buy them from us. Our farm has almost 20 hectares of arable terrain. Productions concern wheat, burley, and lucerne, which is partially employed in the feeding of animals.
THE TURKEY
Nostrano turkey is an almost wild turkey, similar to the wild American turkey. Once, it was present in every farm of the area, brought up in little groups.
Females were used for the hatching of eggs of other bird species.
This kind of turkey was doomed to extinction because it was not convenient for the bringing up, where much weight and very high conversion in meat are needed. The plumage is bronze and another feature is the yellow pigmentation of the skin, really important for the market.
In order to maintain the rough and particular features, it is necessary to respect its natural habitat, so wide spaces, with the possibility of staying in the open air and perching in really high places. Indeed, in our farm, the animals stay in sheds with outdoor aviaries, where turkeys can stay all day long in the open air. These "little outdoor parks" have to be covered with a network, because these turkeys can fly, such as other common wild birds. In the province of Pesaro-Urbino and Ancona this animal is mainly cooked in broth but it is also really good stuffed baked.
A part of the turkeys is sold around a day of life, another part when they get to about 50 days, and some are brought fattened and slaughtered on the farm in a licensed slaughterhouse with C.E.E. stamp. Slaughter takes place "dry" so as to prolong storage times and not lose the quality of meat.

BLACK TURKEY
Until 30 years ago that wild turkey was present in almost all the country houses, living with other birds, until the race is not lost.
We're able to save and play some specimens so that they can redeplay the market. It is noted that the only difference is the color og the plumage.
